Henry Yan in “Kung Fu”

Eddie Liu stars as Henry Yan, a martial arts instructor and Chinese art history buff, on The CW’s “Kung Fu.”

Liu was born in Queens, New York and grew up in Long Island. His parents came to the United States as immigrants by way of India. Growing up, Liu stayed active by training in martial arts and being involved with school sports. After graduating from Hofstra University with a degree in public relations, he studied acting at the renowned William Esper Studio in New York City.

While completing the acting program at Esper, Liu began accumulating commercial credits and theater experience. He then moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. His first major television credit was a recurring role on the Emmy-nominated comedy series “Silicon Valley” and a guest-starring role on “Broad City” and “Time Traveling Bong.” Liu’s breakout role was in Mindy Kaling’s international hit “Never Have I Ever.”

Liu’s theater credits include Leah Nanako Winkler’s LA premiere of “Two Mile Hollow,” Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore’s “Drop Dead!” and “The Future Is Not What It Was at the Walkerspace.”

Over the years, Liu has worked as a personal trainer while pursuing his acting career. He’s trained in various martial arts styles including Shaolin kung fu, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. In addition to acting and training, Liu has studied improvisation at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater and Groundlings.

Liu is of Hakka Chinese descent.
