David Harewood stars as Hank Henshaw/J’onn J’onzz in The CW’s hit series “Supergirl.”

With an expansive list of credits in film, theatre and television, Harewood is perhaps best known for his starring role on “Homeland” as David Estes, the Director of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center, alongside Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. 

Born in Small Heath, Birmingham, England, Harewood first began his acting career as a member of the national Youth Theatre before training at the revered performing arts theater for student productions of modern and classic plays in London. At the young age of 18, Harewood gained a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed Harewood with an Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Harewood can be seen in the 17th century drama “Tulip Fever” directed by Justin Chadwick and co-starring Judi Dench, Matthew Morrison, Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz and Zach Galifianakis.

In 2015, Harewood starred opposite Edwina Findley in writer/director Jake Mahaffy’s drama “Free in Deed.” The film was awarded “Best Film” by the Venice Horizons Jury at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. Set in the distinctive world of storefront churches, and based on actual events, “Free in Deed” depicts one man’s attempts to perform a miracle.

In 2006, Harewood co-starred as Captain Poison, a ruthless warlord, in the Warner Bros. political war thriller “Blood Diamond” alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou.

Harewood recently co-starred in the Emmy nominated mini-series “The Night Manager” opposite Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie.  Based on the novel by John le Carré, the espionage drama focuses on an intelligence agent’s attempt to infiltrate an international arm dealer’s network. In 2014, Harewood appeared in the romantic comedy series “Selfie” alongside Karen Gillan and John Cho. The series followed Eliza Dooley (Gillan), a woman who obsesses with the idea of achieving fame through the use of social media platforms. 

Harewood has an impressive resume of theater credits including originating the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in the Olivier award-winning play “The Mountaintop” with a performance Variety called “commanding” and a critically-acclaimed performance as Oberon in Julie Taymor’s New York production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
